How the calculator works

The calculator multiplies the monthly rent by the fraction of a month the province allows, adds a pet deposit when the tenant has a pet, and rounds down to the cent. It then shows one year of interest at the 2026 rate.

  1. Largest security deposit = monthly rent x 0.5, rounded down to the cent
  2. Largest pet deposit = monthly rent x 1, rounded down to the cent
  3. One year of interest = total deposit x 0.5 / 100

Worked example

Say the rent is $1,800 a month and the tenant has a pet.
