Rules for a tenant's notice in New Brunswick

NoticeAt least one month of written notice before the end of a monthly period. Notice served on the first day of that month is enough.
End dateThe last day of a monthly period. To leave July 31 with rent due on the 1st, give notice on or before July 1.
Fixed-term leasesA fixed-term lease ends automatically at the end of the term, so the tenant does not need to give notice. If the landlord keeps accepting rent after that, a new tenancy starts that follows the rent schedule.
FormNo required form. The notice must be in writing, give the address and end date, and be dated and signed. The province offers an optional Notice of Termination to Landlord form.

How the calculator works

The calculator takes the date the landlord gets the tenant's notice and the day rent is due, and finds the earliest end date the New Brunswick rule allows. It covers a month-to-month tenancy ended by the tenant.

  1. First full rental month = the one that starts on the first rent day on or after the day the notice arrives
  2. End date = the last day of that rental month, which is the day before the next rent day

Worked example

Say the landlord receives the tenant's notice on September 15, 2026, and rent is due on the 1st. The earliest the tenancy can end is October 31, 2026, which is 46 days of notice. Rent is owed up to and including that day.
